PURPOSE:To prevent solid-state image pickup elements from shifting and to stably read images in spite of the fluctuation of temperature, changes with time, vibration and impact by fitting the solid-state image pickup elements to a unit obtained by integrally providing a light splitting member and an image forming lens. CONSTITUTION:The solid-state image pickup elements are fitted on the unit obtained by integrally providing the light splitting member and the image forming lens. Namely, the lens reading unit is made up of a lens barrel 21 housing the image forming lens, a prism 22 being a light splitting means, a red channel R-ch CCD25 being a line image sensor made of the solid-state image pickup elements and a cyan channel C-ch CCD27. The lens 21 converges the optical image of an original, and a dichroic mirror 23 provided in the prism 22 isolates an R-ch image and a C-ch image, which are formed on the light receiving surfaces of the R-ch CCD25 and the C-ch CCD27 surely provided on the prism 22. It is fixed on a fitting surface 21b formed at the back of the lens barrel 21.
