A cartridge - actuated tool for driving fasteners into hard material comprises a piston 21 reciprocable in a barrel 4 and a guide piece 15 capable of being displaced relative to the axis of the piston so that access is provided to the rear end of the guide piece for the introduction of the fastener. The piston 21 is provided with an end portion 21a slidable in the barrel 4 which is pivotable about a pivot 8 carried by a handle portion 1, 2 containing the breech mechanism. A driver portion 21b of the piston is separated from the portion 21d by a collar 21c which is slidable in a socket 10 connected to the barrel. The guide piece 15 is slidable within slots 11 formed in the socket and is also guided by means of a rod 13 secured to the barrel. In order to load the tool with both a fastener and a cartridge the guide piece is moved forwardly against the action of a spring 20 and rotated about the rod 13 and the barrel is pivoted about the pivot 8; the guide piece may be in the form of a cross in order to hold four fasteners. In the modification shown in Fig. 9, the guide piece 35 is connected to a slide member 33 via a ball-and-socket joint 34, the slide member being reciprocable in a guide socket 28 secured to the barrel 24 by means of a split nut 38a, 38b; a shock absorber 39 is mounted between the barrel and the nut. The guide piece 35 is maintained in the position shown by means of a reciprocable sleeve 36. In order to load the tool with a fastener, the sleeve is moved rearwardly so that the guide piece can be rotated at right-angles to the axis of the piston thereby providing access for the insertion of a fastener. The cartridge is loaded into the barrel by pivoting the latter about a pivot 26. In the event of overtravel of the piston, an enlarged portion 29a thereon strikes the slide member so that a flange 33b thereon engages a boss 28a on the socket thereby causing the shock absorber 20 to be compressed. Further overtravel is retarted by the impact of the portion 29a on the slide member causing the flange 33b to override the boss 28a until the portion 29a itself contacts the boss. In both the embodiments shown the spent cartridge is ejected by moving the piston rearwardly so that the end portion 21a strikes the cartridge.
