The performance of a super-charged diesel engine, when starting or when a sudden increase in load is required, can be improved by supplying it with additional air. The air is stored at high pressure in a bottle connected through a valve to the inlet of the turbine driving the super-charger. A sensing device detects the drop in speed when the load increases. A signal is transmitted to an electronic circuit which opens a valve on the auxiliary air supply. This additional air supply matches the additional fuel being supplied by the fuel pumps and so ensures complete combustion.
