The drive has a rectangular duct in line with the direction of motion. The duct contains a plate which may be hinged at one end or may be fixed at an angle to the section of the duct. The plate is connected to a spindle which passes through a gland in the duct. The spindle moves up and down. The inner plate follows the motion and causes the water to flow through the duct.
