The reactor has a baffle extending above the transverse partition which separates the hot sodium in the inner vessel from the cold sodium between the inner vessel and the principal vessel and through which the pumps and heat exchangers pass. The baffle forms, with the partition, a space contg. a static vol. forming a thermal screen between the hot liq. metal in the inner vessel above the baffle and the cold liq. metal between the inner vessel and the principal vessel under the partition. The arrangement increases the mechanical strength of the partition and provides permanent thermal protection for it, because of the considerable lowering of its temp. and redn. in stresses.
