Composite core for intersection of tramway with grooved rails - has non-aligned rail ends welded together and bolted to cast durable steel core

The composite heart piece (5) is for use in the intersections of permanent way railway lines, and is esp. applicable to urban tramway rails with grooved heads. The two rails may be formed by joining two rails (1, 2 and 3, 4) constituting non-aligned legs of the intersection, and the two constituent rails may be of the opposite hand i.e. the grooves (6, 6') are on the opposite sides. The rails are connected by welding the webs together with the interior base flanges cut away and are bolted to the core (5). The core may replace the heads of the rails in the intersection zone to provide a hard-wearing surface.
