The costs of prodn. and assembly for a steam smoothing iron are reduced considerably by a design making >=1 of the cavities of the housing into the water reservoir which is sealed by a plate. A separate reservoir requiring a complicated assembly is thus not necessary. The housing may be of plastic and be injection moulded the sealing plate being of plastic or metal. The sealing plate may be fixed by a mastic softening with heat so that the plate can be removed for inspection and repair. The water inlet may be located anywhere suitably in the housing and the outlet may be a tube fashioned in the housing, with the sealing plate taking part in the transmission of heat.
