The cooker comprises several horizontal, cylindric chambers spaced apart with their axes in a common, vertical plane. The raw material is conveyed through each chamber in turn, starting with the top chamber. The discharge outlet of each chamber delivers raw material to the feed inlet of a chamber beneath. Each chamber is provided with heating, e.g. a steam jacket, is connected to a vacuum system and has an exhaust outlet for water vapour driven off during cooking. The discharge outlet of each chamber is located at the opposite end of the chamber from the feed inlet. Each chamber pref. has an exhaust outlet at both ends. The material is pref. conveyed through each chamber by a rotor on an axial shaft which carries blades to sweep the material around the wall of the chamber. The full length of each chamber is used for transfer of heat to the raw material. The cooker is designed for higher throughputs than previous cookers and has a better thermal efficiency. |
