The arrangement makes use of an optical absorbance method and an ionisation method at the same time. A purely optical method is used for the actual detection of the suspended particles, the absorbance of electromagnetic radiation over a defined measurement path being measured in an optical chamber (1). The suspended particles are also recorded by means of an ionisation chamber (4) having low radioactive output. The object of said chamber (4) is to control the sensitivity of the arrangement used for the optical detection method. This is achieved by feeding the output signals of the two chambers (1, 4) through a multiplicative linking element. This element comprises an electronically controllable ohmic voltage divider (8) whose control input is connected to the output of the ionisation chamber (4) and whose connections carrying the voltage to be divided are connected to the output of the optical chamber (1). <IMAGE>
