The intermittent drive mechanism for the fabric holder of a sewing machine has two inputs for the fabric holder, forming its epicyclic gearing. One input is connected to the drive, while the other input is connected to an oscillating drive. This takes up the reaction momentum from the drive linkage actuated by the drive unit through the sun wheel dependent on the drive of the sewing machine. As the needle penetrates the fabric, there is a subtraction of the drive movement, which is at its maximum at the lower dead point of the needle. The mechanism allows the fabric holder to be moved from the prepn. station to the sewing station while the needle is stationary.
