PURPOSE:To measure a difference in a refractive index distribution due to anisotropy of an optical fiber base material by providing an optical means on the incident side of a transparent object to create a linear polarization in a direction coinciding with an optically anisotropic axis of the transparent object. CONSTITUTION:In an apparatus wherein an angle of incidence of a light beam incident on a transparent object is measured to determine a refractive index distribution within the transparent object from a measurement data thereof, an optical means is provided on the incident side of said transparent object to create a linear polarization in a direction coinciding with an optically anisotropic axis of the transparent object. This enables learning of an accurate refractive index distribution according to a direction of polarization of light in an optical fiber base material 12 with anisotropy. Thus, for example, an anisotropic refractive index distribution can be learned to match an actual propagation state of the optical fiber. |
