With a view to reducing the electrical power consumed in an electrolysis process, at least one of the elements originating from the electrolytic decomposition is combined with a reactive substance such that the combination takes place with heat evolution. This heat is converted into electrical energy which is itself employed to supply a fraction of the low-voltage electrical energy needed for the electrolysis. <IMAGE>
