Process for the preparation of poly(sulphonyldiphenylene) phenylphosphonate

The preparation is carried out by polycondensation of dihydroxydiphenyl sulphone and phenylphosphonyl dichloride in tetrachloroethane with or without a catalyst, where the viscosity of the resultant solution is reduced with respect to the overall solvent by addition of 0.1-25% of methanol, and the solution is introduced into a methanol bath in order to precipitate the poly(sulphonyldiphenylene) phenylphosphonate. The process gives polyphenylphosphonates of adequate degree of polymerisation and low viscosity which are optionally produced in stable dispersion.
