By proceeding via successive stages in which dispersions of polymer and of abrasive powder and mixtures of these dispersions are prepared, a suspension of an abrasive powder is finally obtained in a medium consisting essentially of water and of a glycol thickened by addition of a neutralised carboxypolymethylene polymer and containing up to 50 % by weight of abrasive powder. The suspension thus obtained can be employed for polishing.
