The screen printing stencil ribbon (4) is guided freely over rollers (20, 21, 22) in the printing unit (2) of a screen printing machine (1) without lateral forced guiding and is of reinforced construction on at least one edge (40). The reinforcement serves to prevent tearing or fraying of the screen printing stencil ribbon in the edge region. It can also form a smooth scanning edge for reading elements of a control device which register any misalignment to the right and left in the running of the screen printing stencil ribbon and act on counter-control means. <IMAGE>
