A fuel pumping apparatus includes an annular cam having lobes which urge a pumping plunger in an inward direction through a roller during an injection stroke. A feed pump supplies fuel by way of a throttle to a bore containing the plunger during a filling stroke and a pair of ring members limit the outward movement of the roller and thereby control the maximum fuel. The ring members can be moved axially away from each other to allow an extra amount of fuel to be supplied for starting purposes.
