Synthetic materials are recovered from waste containing thermoplastics and elastomers, with or without metals, by mixing the waste from which the synthetic materials are to be recovered, with sodium chloride which has been brought to >=130 degrees above or below that of the ambient, and agitating the mixture until the synthetic material has been reduced to small particles. The agglomerated sodium chloride is then separated mechanically and the remainder is removed from teh synthetic material by washing. The sodium chloride may be raised to 350 degrees C or lowered to around -150 degrees C. If mixed with the waste at this temp. the thermoplastics crystallise, and after the agitation, the product is raised to room temp. and the salt removed by washing. Recovers the waste plastics in the form similar to the original, so that it can be re-used. Copper is recovered without its being burned and without a further cleaning operation being necessary.
|
