<p>A process for the manufacture of cyano-substituted stilbene compounds of the formula wherein A represents a phenyl, naphthyl, biphenyl, stilben 4- yl, dibenzofuran -3-yl, 4-(benzo¢b!furan-2-yl)-phenyl or 2-phenyl-benzo¢b!furan-6-yl radical and the ring B is substituted in o- or p-position with a cyano group by reacting a methyl compound of the formula with a Schiff's base of the formula wherein Y1 represents chlorine or hydrogen, in dimethyl formamide and in the presence of sodium alcoholate at temperatures of 0 to 40.degree.C as well as new cyano-substituted stilbene compounds of the above formula wherein A is a 4-(benzo¢b!furan-2-yl)-phenyl radical and their use as optical brighteners are provided.</p> |
