The present invention relates to the process for preparing 1-nitro-phenylpyrido 2,3-d!pyrimidine-2,4(1H,3H)-diones represented by the following formula: wherein R is selected from the group consisting of lower alkyl, substituted lower alkyl, unsaturated lower alkyl, substituted unsaturated lower alkyl and aralkyl. The compounds prepared according to the process of the present invention possess a high degree of pharmacological activities such as anti-inflamma-tory, anti-ulcerative, analgetic, antipyretic, antihistaminic and central nervous system depressive activities, and certain of them are useful as new anti-inflam-matory agents, analgesics and central nervous system depressants.
