A fuel cell of the filter press type is formed of an assembly of unit cells each comprising two electrodes and an intermediate separator all the same size and thickness. Each electrode is made of an insulating frame enclosing a central part of electronically conducting material. One of each pair of electrodes is fed with fuel, the other with fuel over one face. The separator comprises three components, i.e. two diaphragms sepd. by an electrolyte distributor. The centre areas of the diaphragms are made of an electronically insulating material which allows ion transfer, while that of the distributor is of an electronically conducting matl. The cell exhibits excellent irrigation by the electrolyte ensuring high values of electrical characteristics. The components are readily obtained by calendering techniques and moulding at a moderate manufacturing cost. |
