Catalytic hydrodesulphurisation of heavy residual oils - with fractionation of used catalyst by density variation

Hydrogenating conversion of heavy petroleum residues is in a 3-phase fluidised bed of liquid residue, catalyst and H2 at elevated temp. and pressure, in which at least part of the catalyst is drawn off, fractionated by density difference in a liquid into active and de-activated fractions, and the former returned to the hydrogenation zone. Used in prodn. of high quality fuel oils contg. less sulphur. Catalyst consumption is reduced.
