Combustion air is delivered by a compressor (14) to a combustion chamber (18) which also receives fuel. The hot gases drive an open circuit turine (20) which drives the output shaft (21). The exhaust gases pass through a heat exchanger (22) in which they evaporate an organic working fluid which drives a closed Rankine cycle turbine (26). This turbine is directly coupled to the compressor (14) which it drives. The exhaust from the Rankine turbine is condensed in a preheater (44) and an air cooled condenser (46). The fan (38) for the condenser is driven through a gearbox (30) to return the condensate to the evaporator. The combined cycle results in a gas turbine with good acceleration for vehicle use.
