The self steering gear for sailing boats has a windvane fixed to a sleeve around a vertical spindle held by a locknut. The spindle is free to rotate in a stirrup frame mounted on the stern of the craft. A bevel gear at the base of the spindle meshes with another on an inclined shaft carrying a balanced servo-rudder. This shaft is carried in bearings in a tube supported by a C-shaped bracket(20) pivoting around the vertical spindle and a point axially below this. Extension arms carry a counterweight and the fixture for the equipment transmitting servo rudder movement to the main rudder.
