Prodn. involves placing a plastic or rubber moulding (I) (opt. reinforced with metal foil) filled with a sealing cpd. (II) between the parts to be sewn and crosslinking the sealant (II) which flows out of the holes pierced in the moulding during the sewing process. USE/ADVANTAGE - Process is useful in the prodn. of watertightrainwear, rucksacks, baggage, etc. and prevents ingress of moisture through the holes made by sewing the seams. The main fabric is pref. e.g. polyethylene film-coated HDPE woven fabric, polyester fabric laminated with polyethylene, polypropylene coated with polyethylene film, rubber film, rubberised linen texture, rubberised polyester fabric, 2 layers of polyethylene film with Al foil interlayer, etc.; pref. (I) is a tube of polyethylene, polypropylene, PVC or polyester film, and (II) is a 1-component RTV silicone.
