Acylated L-cysteine derivs. of formula (I) and their salts are new: T-S. CH2.CH(NHT')COOR (I) (R = H or alkyl, T and T' are acyl radicals at least one of them being 2-thenoyl). Esp. T is 2-thenoyl and T' is benzoyl, thenoyl, chromone-2-carbonyl, succinyl or specifically acetyl. (I) are useful in human and veterinary medicine as mucolytics and for repair of pulmonary or bronchial damage. They are also useful in cosmetics for softening the skin and for control of dandruff. In an example N-acetyl-S-thenoylcysteine was prepd. by reacting N-acetylcysteine with 2-thenoyl chloride.
