A glycerol derivative represented by the formula (I) (I) wherein A is hereinafter defined, including the optionally active isomers per se and mixtures of the optically active isomers, which are useful as a central nervous system depressant, an intermediate for that preparation of .beta.-adrenergic blocking agents, an inhibitor of blood platelet aggregation or a choleretic agent, and a process for preparing the above glycerol derivative.
