MANUFACTURE OF POLARIZED LIGHT MAINTAINING OPTICAL FIBER

PURPOSE:To prevent deformation due to collapse by matching the side pit member of such a base material that its core and side pit are concentrically sectioned lengthwise in a desired shape to desired size and then covering the member with a clad member. CONSTITUTION:The core 1 and side pit member 2 are formed into the concentrically sectioned base material, and the side pit member 2 of the base material is machined lengthwise in the proper shape to the proper size so that the large side pit member 2 is left lengthwise at both side parts about the core 1. Then, the clad member is fitted onto the machined base material to for ma preform which is so sectioned circularly that only the side pit is deformed. Then, the preform is drawn to obtain the side pit maintaining optical fiber. Consequently, the desired side pit is easily obtained with high accuracy and the deformation due to collapse is prevented.
