The control of the gas tightness in a sliding gate valve for a casting vessel involves supplying between the two sliding plates forming the valve a quantity of gas under pressure, the gas having known physical characteristics; measuring the physical characteristics, partic. the flow rate and/or gas pressure, of the flowing gas in one at least of the closure positions of the valve; and comparing these to a standard flow characteritic. The technique enables an assessment to be made of the wear state of the plates and of any faulty mounting arrangement of the plates so that the faults can be rectified.
