Optical concentrator directs solar radiation incident on the concentrator onto the front surface of a photovoltaic cell when the unit is aimed at the sun. The cell has a front surface for receiving electromagnetic energy, a p-n junction, a back surface with a first conductive contact on the back surface, and a second contact formed by a conductor covering a minor portion of the front surface. The concentrator is arranged so that in the region on the front surface adjacent the conductor the radiation intensity is >=25% greater than the average intensity over the front surface. Cell has high resistivity electrodes over the front surface and they create loss of power. Loss of power is kept to a minimum by concentrating energy adjacent the main conductive contact at the periphery of the cell.
|
