The engine has a swirl chamber(7) in the cylinder head(4). A narrow passage(6) between the cylinder and the swirl chamber is controlled by a valve(11) operated from the camshaft(14). Fuel is delivered by a low pressure system(24) through a port(23) in the cylinder head into a space(18) within the transfer valve(11). As the valve moves this port closes and a further port(27) opens to allow fuel to pass from the valve space(18) into the swirl chamber. This last transfer is effected by the acceleration of the valve which raises the pressure of the fuel in it.
