Substrate is heated to a temp. (T1) above 250 degrees C and brought into brief contact with a glass enamel heated to a temp. (T2) above T1 and which produces a log of viscosity (logv) of the glass of 0.1-2. The molten glass enamel may be sprayed onto the substrate or the latter immersed in the molten glass. For steel T1 is pref. 350-400 degrees C, the steel being dipped into molten glass until its surface temp. (Ta) exceeds 600 degrees C. Aluminium is pref. heated to T1 = 250 degrees C and held in a glass bath until Ta = 450-500 degrees C, For Cu, T1 is pref. 350-400 degrees C, and the Cu is immersed in a glass bath until Ta = 500-550 degrees C. A glass substrate is pref. heated to T1 = 400 degrees C, then dipped into molten glass enamel until Ta = 550-600 degrees C. The process can be used instead of the flame spraying of powders which must possess a carefully controlled grain size.
|
