The two-piece ski-boot is divided into foot(10) and lower-leg(11) section with a hinge(12) connecting the two. The hinge(12) provides for relative swivelling about a horizontal transverse axis in the instep zone, and the two pieces are additionally connected by a self-releasing fastener(21) behind the heel. The fastener(21) combines with a boot to ski-fastener at the heel to form a release-mechanism which is designed to avoid leg-fractures under a variety of accidental circumstances e.g. falls. The force required to effect release of the boot-fastener(21) is adjustable, acts vertically, and may be less than the force effecting release of the boot to ski-fastener. The boot has relatively rigid external shells containing an elastic padding, and the swivel(12) may permit a relative rotation of 40 to 45 deg. A supply tube(16) may project from the foot(10) and into the leg(11) to form a seal.
