Electroslag remelting and deposition welding of metals - where electric power supply is connected to top and bottom of ring mould

The plant consists of a ring-shaped, chilled mould (a) mounted on a base (b). Mould (a) consists of a vertical stack of ring sections (c) which are electrically insulated from each other; and the electric power supply is connected to the top section (c) and to base (b), which thus form the two electrodes required. Hoppers feed the filler material into mould (a). The top section (c) pref. has a lining (d) made of electrically conducting material (ECM); and the feed hopper may be connected in parallel with the top section (c) so the filler material functions as a consumable electrode. Used for mfr. of ingots in ferrous or nonferrous metals, esp. high alloy steels; and also to deposit metal on a flat or circular surface. A special application is to deposit one metal onto another metal, e.g. to mfr. a large roll for working metals.
