The mould includes a cooled, tubular sheath and, for the initial cooling of the molten metal in the mould, the latter is (partly) closed near its inlet by a transverse wall (a) which cools the core of the melt; and a coolant flows through wall (a). Wall (a) is pref. inclined, or at 90 degrees, w.r.t. the longitudinal axis (X) of the mould. In some of the pref. mould designs, axis (X) is vertical and wall na) is a horizontal or sloping extension on the top of the mould; and the hollow wall (a) contains a baffle plate directing the flow of cooling water. In another pref. design, axis (X) is horizontal, and a vertical wall (a) completely closes the inlet end of the mould, the inlet for molten metal being located alongside wall (a), which is cooled internally by flowing water. The internal zone or core of the billet being cast is cooled at the inlet end of vertical or horizontal moulds, so the long molten core present in conventional continuous casting plants is eliminated. |
