The tea or coffee machine has a measuring unit with a lever (11) biased by the container (6) containing the measured volume. This engages on one end of a spring (12) with its other end mounted on a setting member (13, 14, 15) which determines the spacing between the spring ends. The swinging end of the lever engages a snap catch (18) at an end position at which a switch (23) is actuated. The desired number of cups is set on the setting member, and after the corresponding amount of water has flowed in, the lever swivels round under the weight of the water and locks in as soon as the required amount of waters is in the container. This shuts off any further water supply. The container can also be removed from the apparatus without the supply of the water being started up since the lever is locked in the closed position.
