The specification discloses a catalyst for oxidation and reduction reactions containing a perovskite-like manganite of the formula RE1-xMxMnO3, in which RE is one or more rare earth elements selected from the group La, Pr, and Nd; M is one or more elements selected from the group Na, K, and Rb; and x is from 0.1 to 0.4. Any of the indicated cations may be reduced by up to about 15 atom percent to accommodate vacancy structures. The catalysts are particularly useful for the removal of NOx from automobile emissions in order to prevent air pollution.
