A fuel sensor detects the alcohol content in the gasoline fuel mixt. to enable a correction signal for mixture compsn. alteration to be produced in a control unit, the sensor having a fuel sample evapn. device. The correction signal is obtd. by (i) heating the fuel sample and simultaneously measuring its temp. for continuous determination of the gradient of the heating curve (T= f(t)); (ii) if the temp. gradient differs from a predetermined temp. gradient of a usual fuel, measuring the sample temp. and starting an evapn. time measurement using a reproducible heating power curve; (iii) if the sample temp. gradient is similar to the initial temp. gradient of the usual fuel, measuring the sample temp. stopping the evapn. time measurement and determining the total evapn. time; (iv) comparing the temp. and evapn. time values with comparison values of alcohol type-specific characteristics stored in the control unit to form a correction signal; (v) altering the engine control values in accordance with the correction signal; and (vi) storing the correction signal until correction is confirmed or realised by renewed fuel sample measurement.
