When reacting organosilicon compounds with solid, very finely dispersed silicon dioxide, while at the same time subjecting the reaction mixture to mechanical stress which comminutes the very finely dispersed silicon dioxide and/or its aggregates, there is used, in addition to any water which may already be absorbed on the silicon dioxide, up to 3% by weight of water, based on the weight of the silicon dioxide. The hydrophobic silicon dioxide obtained is suitable as a filler in compositions which can be cured to form elastomers, as well as for thermoplastics and as an aid for enhancing the pourability of pulverulent materials and as a thickener for liquids.
