Electronic appts. measures the net length (ln) of a tube and defines the cut lengths (lc) to be obtd. from the tube according to a program; the tube is then cut into lengths (lc). The appts. has two coordinated units: (1) a unit which measures ln and calculates lc according to predetermined instructions; and (2) a unit moving the tube for the cutting operatio. The tube is cut automatically according to the data received. Unit (1) pref. has a numerical or analogue device measuring ln; a counter; and an algebraic adder to determine the front and tail ends of the tube to be eliminated leaving. ln, which is then divided into the optimum values of lc. Unit (1) pref. also includes a memory for automatic control; and unit (2) places the tube in the correct posn. w.r.t. the cutter. Used for cutting rolled tubes to length, where the tube has been made e.g. on a pilger rolling mill and has faults on its front and tail ends, which must be cut off to leave a usable length(ln). The appts. determines ln and calculates the optimum values of lc, followed by cutting into lengths (lc).
