Simplified vasoconstricting imidazoline(s) prodn. - by reacting a phenoxy-acetonitrile with ethylene di:amine tosylate and hydrolysing

Imidazoline derivs. of formula (where R is 1-6C alkyl or alkoxy or 3-6C cycloalkyl), useful as vasoconstrictors, are produced by reacting with ethylene diamine monotosylate and then hydrolysing. (I) are produced without having to go via the formation of unstable imino-ether inters. The reaction is carried out in a solvent (e.g. o-dichlorobenzene) under N2 at raised temps. (ca 180 degrees C).
