The power supply for cold cathode discharge lamps is normally used in lighting applications and esp. mercury vapour lamps. The supply is derived from the normal A.C. supply via a unit overcoming problems associated with the energy dissipated in the stator inductance and phase shifting of the supply voltage. The unit is based on the use of a transformer (TR) one winding of which is in series with the lamp (1) and a transistor (T1). A thyristor (Th1) between the transistor base and the negative supply is triggered at a threshold determined by a resistor (R2) in the emitter circuit, the base being driven from a relaxation oscillator (7).
|
