1-Alkyl-piperidine (N)-oxide derivs. - useful as CNS stimulants and tremorine antagonists

Piperidine N-oxide derivs. of formula (I) and their acid-addn. salts are new. In the formula, R1 is alkyl; A is CAr1Ar2 or CHCHAr1Ar2; Ar1 and Ar2 are phenyl opt. monosubstd. by halogen or alkyl. Cpds. (I) are CNS stimulants which relieve tremors associated with extrapyramidal disorders and increase motility; some also have an antagonistic action against haloperidol, phenothaizine, etc. Unlike amphetamine, they have no hypertensive or sympathomimetic action. A typical cpd. (I) is 4-diphenylmethyl-1-methylpiperidine N-oxide. In an example, this is prepd. from 4-diphenylmethyl-1-methylpiperidine and m-chloroperbenzoic acid.
