The process produces a wheel nut with polygonal spanner face and a conical end bearing against the wheel, together with a cap of corrosion-resistant steel, enclosing the spanner faces and the end opposite the conical one, ending near the join between the latter and the spanner faces. A first electrode is pressed against the conical nut end and a second one against a portion of the cap bearing directly against the nut. An electrical impulse is generated between the electrodes, having a duration of 30 micro-secs. and a current peak value >50,000 amperes. This forms a weld between cap and nut at a point close to where the second electrode bears against the cap, causing no negative metallurgical alterations in the cap materials.
