The rotary piston (1) combustion engine comprises separate chambers for compression (18), combustion, and expansion(19) of the fuel/air mixture. It is provided with means which cyclically connect the compression and combustion chambers, and the combustion and expansion chambers. The expansion chamber (19) is an annular chamber concentric around the output shaft and has at least one outlet and a piston (1) connected with the shaft. Compression may be effected in the grooves (20) of a long-pitch worm wheel which is engaged by a disc-shaped lobed rotor, the arrangement being such that the compressed mixture is admitted to the combustion chamber as a rotor lobe disengages from the groove (20), the exhaust port in the housing end wall being controlled by the piston (1).
