Desulphurisation of molten iron using soda - where addn. of aluminium to the slag increases the amt. of sulphur removed

Soda is blown with the aid of a carrier gas underneath the surface of the iron, esp. crude iron, while a reducing agent is added to the slag. The reducing agent is pref. Al or its alloys, esp. adding 5-40 kg. Al per tonne slag mainly or completely during the second half of the desulphurisation stage, which pref. occurs in a closed vessel or with the aid of an immersion lance for adding the soda. The addn. of Al to the slag increases the removal of sulphur from the iron.
