A hair clipper(10) has a hollow handle(12) which supports a motor(26). The motor shaft(28) drives a crank(30) which oscillates a lever(44) attached to a tubular shaft(42). The tubular shaft(42) carries a blade(56) at its lower end and is mounted on a central solid shaft(34) which carries a fixed blade(36). The hollow handle(12) of the clipper is connected to a vacuum source. As the clipper is moved over the customer's head the oscillation of the blades(56) cuts the hair which is immediately removed by suction through the outlet(14). Incorporating the suction device with the clipper enables hair-cutting to be carried out more hygienically.
