In order to prevent fluid entering cable insulation through damaged areas from proceeding longitudinally within the cable to emerge at an end of the cable or in the region of a joint, the insulation 5 is stripped from the cable core 1 at an end portion of the cable 3 or the portion adjacent the joint and a sealing material 3 is applied around the core 1 and the insulation 5 in the region where the core 1 projects from the insulating layer. In the case of two insulated cables joined end to end, the stripped ends of the two cores are connected electrically by a joint 6 and the sealing material 3 extends over the joint 6 the exposed cores 1 and the adjoining parts of the insulation 5.
