Circular detector for X=rays - has fast response time and 18 per cent energy discrimination

A circular detector system is used for X-rays. It is designed esp. for use in work with crystalline powders and dissolved proteins, overcoming the slow response and lack of energy discrimination of Gieger - Muller tubes. The detector system(10) has a face area considerably greater than that of linear types and typically has a 40 mm diameter with a depth of 4 mm. Response time is five times less than for linear types. Spectral resolution is 2 mm and energy resolution is approx. 18%. The cathode consists of a series of concentric circles fed from a uniform divider chain.
