An engraving machine consists of a stand (12) which supports a lever (16) on a pin (18) mounted on a bearing (20). This lever (6) enables the movement of the probe (28) to be reproduced on a reduced scale by the engraving tool (24). When engraving the inner surface of a ring it is held by the jaws (26) of a chuck so that the tool (24) contacts the inner surface. A system of levers (58)(44) drives a pawl and to rotate the chuck support wheel (34) after each sepaate letter has been engraved. These levers (58)(44) are linked to a slider mechanism which controls the rotation of the letter template wheel (62) in such a way that the space between adjacent engraved letters is always the same irrespective of the widths of the letters.
