A method for shirring casings for sausage production on automatic filling machines uses apparatus in which the casing fed continuously to a shirring station, is firstly squeezed air-tightly in a first station (14) at a distance before the shirring station (18) and then, inflated by compressed air pushed together axially with fold formation on to a mandrel (30) which yieldingly passes through rotating tools forming the shirring station (18), and against a stop (28) coupled with the mandrel (30), with the aid of the rotating tools, and comprises the improvement that the casing is substantially frictionlessly centred in a centring zone (16) at least in the major part of the zone between the squeezing station and the shirring station. The centring zone may include endless belts contacting the inflated casing and moving at a speed intermediate the speed of rotation of rolls forming the squeezing station and tools forming the shirring station, or may be provided with rollers on frictionless bearings or with a plurality of nozzles distributed along and around the casing and supplying fluids inwardly towards the casing. <IMAGE> |
